My professor doesn’t include everything in the lecture so we have to go through the book and fill in the wholes. This book is very hard to navigate. If the professor is teaching by the book it is OK but everything is paragraph form like a story.
Some people this works for but for people that are trying to study for specific concepts it is difficult to navigate. Not to mention it is completely boring. Even if you are interested in cognitive psychology it is very bland writing and doesn’t evoke interest at all. I hate to say this but there isn’t enough pictures. Not because I like useless pictures in a book but there are SOOO many diagrams that can be used to illustrated the topics and they are WAY underutilized.
If you’re looking for something that will help you lose track of time, fall asleep with your book open, and turn your mind to mush, this is your book!

I had to use this book for a class. Because of the subject, a lot of information was necessarily stretched out and over-elaborated upon, but poorly. The authors’ rarely described cited studies in a way that made sense. I found myself re-reading such passages over and over trying to figure out what exactly was going on in the study, to no avail. I would have been better advised to skip any such study descriptions and move on to the description of the point of the study. I feel like I was part of an experiment just reading this book.
Can I have the control version of the text book that makes sense please? I had no problem studying with this book maybe its because I knew psjchology pages to read.
I never had a chance to use pschology CogSci books so I don’t know how coggnitive it is but, this book works for me. I do agree this book is hard to navigate so I’ll give 4 instead of 5.
This book covers major topics in cognitive psychology. It’s reasonably good, but seems oversimplistic in some respects. Also, a few of the illustrations have errors–small things, but enough to be irritating to someone with an eye for detail.
Overall I’d think of it as a good starting point for someone interested in cognition, with references to other sources if you’re interested. One person found this helpful.
To echo some of the other comments, this text is not very well written nor organized. The authors skip over definitions and foundational concepts to build off of. This creates a frustrating experience to the reader.
Many ambiguities exist and the connections between studies cited and the concept or theory in questions are often fuzzy. Since there are better cognitive psychology texts out there, I would advise against buying this book. Instead buy a different book and then dive into the primary literature to get a better handle on this very abstract and esoteric subject. This is a great book.
The chapter break down is organied in a way that it made sense as a reader even as someone with no prior knowledge of even the basics of the material covered.
Somewhat fun to read- if I dare say that as a student: Thanks for the book, saved me a lot of money. And i am pretty sure anyone who is reading this who is in college knows how ridiculously expensive these text books can be. I buy this as textbook of my cognitive psychology courses. Truly, it is a bit expensive, but very new. I am very satisfied. See all 10 reviews. Customers who viewed this item also viewed. Connecting Mind, Research and Everyday Experience.
