He spent his childhood in dire poverty. During the period when he wrote novels to – revolutions was over, Permanent revenue settlement of Bengal by Lord Cornwallis agricultural lands was in force. The Zamindars absentee landlords were forcing the raiyat, to pay revenue of the land being cultivated by them. The situation of riyat who were exploited by Zamindars and situation of high caste young widows of rich and poor in society was pitiable.
Freedom movement was at its peak. Young men were attracted to join the movement.
Sarat went to Burma and started writing novels and short stories on the above situations. His women characters are young widows, frustrated and unloved young wives of Zamindars and young men committed to bring freedom from the British. It is a worth reading book for all.
